Background of the Study

Agricultural tourism, or agritourism, refers to tourism activities centered on farms, agricultural practices, and rural communities. It offers visitors a chance to experience farming life, taste locally produced foods, and connect with rural culture. Globally, agritourism has emerged as a tool to preserve agricultural heritage, promote sustainable farming practices, and enhance local economies. In Nigeria, Nasarawa State is known for its rich agricultural landscape, producing staple crops such as yam, rice, and millet, as well as indigenous foods unique to its cultural heritage.

Agritourism in Nasarawa State has the potential to promote the region's local food culture by showcasing traditional farming methods, indigenous culinary practices, and local food festivals. However, the relationship between agritourism and the promotion of local food culture in Nasarawa State has not been widely explored. This study seeks to examine how agritourism can serve as a vehicle for sustaining local food traditions, boosting tourism, and creating economic opportunities for rural communities.

Statement of the Problem

Despite Nasarawa State's agricultural significance, local food culture is increasingly at risk due to the adoption of modern diets and the declining interest in traditional farming. Agritourism could address this issue by creating avenues for tourists to engage with local food production and consumption. However, the lack of investment in agritourism infrastructure and limited promotion of Nasarawa’s agricultural heritage restrict its development. This study examines how agritourism can effectively promote local food culture and contribute to the socioeconomic growth of the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To explore the potential of agricultural tourism in promoting local food culture in Nasarawa State.

  2. To assess the economic benefits of agritourism for rural communities in Nasarawa State.

  3. To propose strategies for integrating agritourism into the state’s tourism development framework.

Research Questions

  1. How can agritourism promote local food culture in Nasarawa State?

  2. What are the economic benefits of agritourism for rural communities in Nasarawa State?

  3. What strategies can enhance the integration of agritourism into Nasarawa State's tourism sector?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Agritourism significantly promotes the preservation and dissemination of local food culture in Nasarawa State.

  2. Agritourism provides substantial economic benefits for rural communities in Nasarawa State.

  3. Strategic investment in agritourism infrastructure will enhance its integration into the tourism development framework in Nasarawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on agritourism activities in Nasarawa State, particularly in areas known for agricultural production and food culture. Limitations include inadequate data on existing agritourism initiatives and challenges in accessing rural communities for fieldwork.
